Preview

Scotland’s bid to reach a first World Cup finals since 1998 comes down to a winner-takes-all night at Hampden Park, where only a victory will send Steve Clarke’s men directly to the 2026 tournament. Saturday’s 3–2 defeat against Greece briefly placed qualification at risk, but Denmark’s shock 2–2 draw with Belarus kept the door open and ensured Scotland enter the final evening one point behind the Danes with their fate still controllable.

Clarke’s side already know the play-offs are secured regardless, yet avoiding that perilous route will motivate a team that has won nine of their last 12 World Cup qualifiers, and one that has shown strong resilience at home across competitive fixtures. However, cracks did appear in Piraeus, particularly defensively where Scotland struggled with Greece’s intensity. Even so, individual positives emerged: Ryan Christie has now scored in consecutive internationals for the first time in five years, while Ben Doak struck his maiden senior international goal in what was a breakout performance.

Denmark arrive knowing a draw is sufficient to take them to the USA, Canada and Mexico as group winners. Yet their performance against Belarus raised concerns, and illness issues in the camp have complicated Brian Riemer’s plans. The Danes have been largely reliable in this cycle, unbeaten in their last five WCQ matches, but they have struggled with consistency in the final third and now face a Scotland team emboldened by the stakes and the energy of Hampden Park.

Historically, Scotland have enjoyed this fixture, winning 11 of 19 meetings against the Danes. But Denmark’s technical quality, structured possession game and long-range creativity through Christian Eriksen and Mikkel Damsgaard remain significant threats. Højlund’s availability could be decisive: Denmark’s last seven competitive wins have all featured the Manchester United striker either scoring or assisting.

With both nations confirmed in the top two and direct qualification resting entirely on this match, tension and momentum will play as big a role as tactical detail. A febrile Hampden, a motivated Scotland and a vulnerable Denmark combine to create a high-stakes finale befitting the occasion.
