Preview

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations reaches its conclusion in Rabat on Sunday evening as hosts Morocco face reigning champions Senegal in a heavyweight final between the continent’s two highest-ranked sides. With defensive solidity, tournament pedigree and contrasting pressures at play, this promises to be a finely balanced finale.

Morocco are one win away from ending a 50-year wait for continental glory, having last lifted the AFCON trophy in 1976. Under Walid Regragui, the Atlas Lions have evolved into a composed, tactically disciplined side, conceding just once across six matches at this tournament. Their semi-final victory over Nigeria came via penalties after a tense, low-quality contest, but their defensive control once again proved decisive.

Playing at home has only strengthened Morocco’s hand. They have not lost a competitive match on home soil since November 2009, an extraordinary run stretching over 15 years, and the atmosphere in Rabat is expected to be overwhelmingly in their favour. Ranked 11th in the FIFA world rankings, Morocco entered the tournament as Africa’s top-ranked nation and now stand on the brink of validating that status.

Senegal, however, arrive with a pedigree that commands respect. Champions in 2021 and finalists again in 2023, the Lions of Teranga are appearing in their third final across the last four editions. Their 1–0 semi-final victory over Egypt was settled late by Sadio Mané, whose calm finish under pressure epitomised Senegal’s tournament temperament. They have conceded just two goals in six games and kept four clean sheets, reinforcing their reputation as one of the hardest sides to break down in African football.

This final renews a rivalry that has historically favoured Morocco, who lead the all-time AFCON head-to-head record (W18, D6, L7). However, Senegal’s recent tournament pedigree and success in knockout football levels the psychological ground, particularly after their penalty shoot-out triumph over Morocco in the 2021 AFCON quarter-finals.

Margins are razor-thin, but context matters. Senegal’s suspensions, particularly the absence of Koulibaly, remove a vital layer of defensive security, while Morocco arrive intact, at home, and with a defensive platform built for finals football. If Morocco can turn control into a decisive moment, they may finally end their 50-year wait.
